Unraveling the Process of Rhenium Extraction and Refinement

Rhenium, one of the rarest elements in the Earth's crust, has become increasingly significant in various industrial applications. Extraction of Rhenium

Rhenium is not found in a free state in nature; instead, it's mostly obtained as a byproduct of molybdenum and copper mining. The process begins with the extraction of molybdenite ore, which contains trace amounts of rhenium.

Processing Steps

Concentration: The ore is crushed and ground, and then subjected to flotation processes to concentrate the molybdenite content.

Roasting: The concentrated molybdenite is then roasted in the presence of air or oxygen, during which rhenium volatilizes as rhenium oxide (ReO2).

Leaching and Solvent Extraction: The rhenium oxide is then leached with water or alkaline solutions and extracted into an organic solvent.
